A Sprout Social alternative for research (not scheduling)

If Sprout's scheduling and inbox work for you but its listening doesn't, here's what users say, what it costs, and the alternatives for research.

Short answer

If Sprout works for your scheduling and inbox, keep it there: users mostly praise those parts. What they say falls short is research. Listening is a separate quote-only add-on, and some find it misses conversations. For monitoring with alerts, Brand24 starts at $199 a month. For reading what an audience actually says, a connector such as Scrollhound lets Claude or ChatGPT read the threads, comments and videos directly.

Sprout Social is a solid social media suite, and most people searching for an alternative aren’t unhappy with all of it. Read what users say and a pattern shows: the scheduling, inbox and account reporting are fine; the research side costs a lot for what it finds.

What users say

From the r/socialmedia thread “Social Listening Tool?” (January 2026):

  • “It’s really expensive and basically only pulls from X.” (the original poster, who had Sprout)
  • “I love the general analytics for my accounts, but haven’t found the social listening to be helpful at all. It’s not picking up 90% of what we’re asking it for.”
  • “We still use it for other things like scheduling content / inbox management, and it’s fine at those.”

And from r/sociallistening, comparing Brand24 and Sprout (August 2026): “Listening is an add-on, so it can get expensive pretty quickly.”

Sprout says it has been improving listening, and these are a few users’ experiences, not a test. But they line up with reviews on G2 and Capterra, where cost is among the most mentioned drawbacks.

What it costs

Prices from Sprout’s pricing page on 27 October 2026, per seat per month:

Plan Billed yearly Billed monthly
Essentials $79 $99
Standard $199 $249
Professional $299 $399
Advanced $399 $499

A three-person team on Standard pays $597 a month billed yearly, before the Listening add-on, which is priced by quote. There’s a 30-day free trial with no card.

Pick the alternative by job

You want everything Sprout does, for less. Hootsuite starts at $99 per user per month billed yearly. For scheduling only, Buffer is $5 per channel a month and Later from $25 a month. Check which of Sprout’s features you use before switching; the inbox and reporting are where suites differ most.

You want monitoring that catches more. Brand24 ($199 a month billed yearly) covers X, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, news and podcasts with alerts and AI sentiment. Enterprise teams look at Brandwatch, Meltwater and Talkwalker, all quote only. Our social listening comparison has the full list with prices.

You want to know what people actually say. This is the research job: what a niche complains about, what questions keep coming up, what a competitor’s audience loves. Dashboards and sentiment scores don’t answer it; reading the posts does. That’s what Scrollhound is for.

Research with Scrollhound

Scrollhound is a connector for Claude and ChatGPT that reads Reddit, X, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Hacker News: whole threads with their comments, video transcripts and comment sections, and search across them. You ask in plain words, and the answer comes back with a link on every quote. The quotes on this page were gathered that way, from the threads in full.

A prompt that does a week of listening-for-research in one go:

Search Reddit for posts about <your category> in r/<subreddit> from the past month, read the five
most discussed with their comments, and give me a table of complaints, exact quotes and links.
Then search X for the same topic from the last 7 days with at least 20 likes and add anything new.

What it isn’t: no alerts, no dashboards, no publishing. It’s a research tool you run when you have a question, or on a schedule with Claude’s scheduled tasks.

Cost: Solo is $39 a month for 1,500 reads, Pro $99 for 5,000 (a $49 launch price for now), and pay as you go $25 per 1,000. A Reddit thread with up to 500 comments is 1 read, so a month of weekly briefs and a few dozen thread reads fits easily in Solo.

The setup most teams end up with

Keep Sprout (or a cheaper scheduler) for publishing and the inbox. Add a monitoring tool only if you need alerts. Do the research in the AI you already use, with a connector that can read the conversation. Setup takes about two minutes.

Questions

How much does Sprout Social cost in 2026?

Billed yearly, Essentials is $79, Standard $199, Professional $299 and Advanced $399, each per seat per month. Billed monthly it's $99 to $499. Listening and Premium Analytics are add-ons for Standard and up, priced by quote.

Does Sprout Social include social listening?

Standard and up include keyword monitoring for 10 to 20 brand keywords. The full Listening product is a separate add-on you buy through sales.

What's the cheapest alternative to Sprout for scheduling?

For scheduling alone, Buffer starts at $5 per channel a month and Later at $25 a month. They don't replace Sprout's inbox and reporting on every plan, so compare what you actually use.

Can I use Scrollhound alongside Sprout?

Yes. Scrollhound only reads, so it doesn't overlap with Sprout's publishing or inbox. Teams keep Sprout for posting and use Scrollhound in Claude or ChatGPT for research.
