Refund policy

Our order process is conducted by Stripe through its Onelink service. Onelink is the Merchant of Record for all our orders and handles payment questions and refunds. Refunds are paid by Stripe to the payment method you used, and include any tax you paid on the refunded amount. Terms defined in our terms of service have the same meaning here.

1. Refunds within 14 days

1.1 You may ask for a refund of any payment within 14 days of the date of that payment, for any reason. This applies to packs of Reads, the first payment for a Plan, and each renewal payment.

1.2 The amount refunded is:

1. the whole payment, if you have used none of the Reads it provided; or
2. if you have used some of those Reads, the payment multiplied by the number of unused Reads and divided by the number of Reads the payment provided.

1.3 Requests that did not use Reads (reading Hacker News, reading the same content again within 24 hours, and requests that failed or returned no results) do not count as used Reads.

1.4 When a refund is made, the refunded Reads are removed from your Account.

2. Your statutory right to cancel

2.1 If you are a consumer in the United Kingdom, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give you the right to cancel a purchase within 14 days of the date of the contract. When you start using the Service during those 14 days, you ask us to begin providing it immediately, and if you then cancel you pay for the part of the Service you have used.

2.2 A refund under section 1 gives you at least what that statutory right gives you, and you may use section 1 to exercise it. Consumers in other countries keep any equivalent rights that the law of their country gives them.

3. How to ask for a refund

3.1 You may ask for a refund in either of these ways:

1. through Onelink: use the link on your receipt, or go to onelink.com, find your order with the email address you used at checkout, and contact Onelink support; or
2. by emailing hello@scrollhound.com from the email address you used at checkout, with your receipt or invoice number.

3.2 We will reply to a refund request sent to us within 5 working days. Once a refund is approved, Stripe sends it to your original payment method; the time it takes to reach you depends on your bank or card provider.

3.3 Stripe may also refund a payment itself within 60 days of the payment, for example to resolve a payment enquiry. Section 1.2 applies to that refund in the same way.

4. Cancelling a Plan

4.1 You may cancel your Plan at any time under Manage billing on the Plan and billing page of your Account, or through Onelink.

4.2 Cancelling stops the next renewal. Your Plan and its Reads remain available until the end of the billing period you have paid for. If you subscribed to Pro at its launch price, that price ends when you cancel.

4.3 Cancelling does not by itself refund the current billing period. To receive money back for a payment made in the last 14 days, ask for a refund under section 3.

5. After 14 days

5.1 We do not give refunds for a change of mind more than 14 days after a payment.

5.2 Whenever the payment was made, we will refund or credit you if:

1. you were charged more than once for the same purchase;
2. the Service was unavailable to you for more than 72 consecutive hours, or for more than 7 days in total in a billing period you paid for, for reasons within our control, in which case we refund the affected part of that billing period; or
3. we stop providing the Service, or close your Account for a reason other than those in clause 10.2 of our terms, in which case we refund the Reads you bought and have not used, and the unused part of any prepaid billing period.

5.3 We may refuse a refund where we have evidence of fraud or of abuse of this policy, including buying, using and requesting refunds for Reads more than twice in 12 months. If you are a consumer, this policy does not affect your statutory rights.
