An honest comparison of social listening tools by job and budget, with October 2026 prices: Brand24, Brandwatch, Meltwater, Sprout, Octolens, F5Bot and more.

Short answer

For always-on brand monitoring on a small budget, Brand24 (from $199 a month) and Awario (from £29) are the usual picks; enterprise teams choose between Brandwatch, Meltwater and Talkwalker, all quote-only. For Reddit and communities, F5Bot has a free tier and Syften starts at $29.95. If what you need is research rather than alerts, a connector such as Scrollhound lets Claude or ChatGPT read the threads, comments and videos themselves.

The tools in this space are good at different jobs, and most of the disappointment people describe comes from buying one for the wrong job. A thread in r/socialmedia titled “Social Listening Tool?” (62 comments, January 2026) captures it. The original poster on Sprout Social: “It’s really expensive and basically only pulls from X.” Another commenter, who trialled Meltwater, Brandwatch, Hootsuite’s Talkwalker and YouScan, picked YouScan: “Still not cheap, but it’s worked really well for me.” And a third: “I don’t trust the sentiment analysis of any of the tools I’ve used.”

So start with the job:

  • Monitoring: know when your brand, product or a crisis keyword comes up, fast, with alerts.
  • Research: understand what an audience says about a topic so you can decide what to make or how to pitch it. Here you need to read the actual posts and comments, not a sentiment chart.

Prices below were checked on each vendor’s pricing page on 27 October 2026. “Quote only” means you have to talk to sales.

Monitoring on a small-team budget

Brand24 is the default for small brands and agencies that want alerts without a full social suite. It watches X, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, news, blogs, podcasts and more, with AI sentiment on every plan. Individual is $199 a month billed yearly ($249 monthly) for 3 keywords and 2,000 mentions; Team is $299 for 7 keywords. 14-day trial. It won’t manage your accounts; it only listens.

Awario is the cheapest serious option, priced in pounds: £29 a month billed yearly for 3 topics, with Boolean search and unlimited keywords per topic on every plan. It covers Reddit, X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and news.

Mention now shows a single Company plan with “Get a demo” only, so it has moved out of the self-serve bracket.

Enterprise listening

Brandwatch (owned by Cision) claims over 100 million sources and the deepest archive here. It’s built for brand and consumer research teams with an analyst’s time to spend. Quote only, demo, no trial.

Meltwater started in news monitoring and covers 20+ social networks, including Reddit, TikTok, Threads, Bluesky and Asian networks like WeChat and Douyin. Quote only, and no self-serve trial.

Lumen by Talkwalker is Talkwalker’s new name since Hootsuite bought it; it claims 150 million sources in 187 languages. Quote only. The commenter above found the product neat and the sales process exhausting.

YouScan stands out for visual listening: it spots logos, objects and scenes in images. Starter is $499 a month billed yearly for 3 topics and 15,000 mentions.

Listening inside a suite you might already pay for

Sprout Social plans run $79 to $399 per seat per month billed yearly ($99 to $499 monthly). Listening is a separate add-on for Standard and up, with no public price. Users’ main complaints are the per-seat price, the add-on cost and coverage; our Sprout Social alternative guide goes deeper.

Hootsuite includes basic listening, but Reddit, Instagram and 13 months of history need Enterprise, where listening is powered by Talkwalker. Plans start at $99 per user per month billed yearly.

Later adds brand mentions and listening on its Scale plan ($110 a month, or $82.50 billed yearly), covering Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Buffer has no listening.

Reddit and communities

F5Bot emails you when a keyword appears in a new Reddit post or comment, or on Hacker News. The free tier is still there; Silver is $12.99 a month for 20 keywords, Gold $49.99 for 200 with AI filtering. No history: it only alerts on new items.

Syften watches Reddit, Hacker News, YouTube, podcasts, Bluesky, Product Hunt and more, from $29.95 a month. X costs $40 a month extra and YouTube $20. No LinkedIn.

Octolens is built for B2B and developer brands: Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Hacker News, GitHub and review sites, from $159 a month billed yearly with two years of history.

GummySearch, once the go-to for Reddit research, closed on 30 November 2025, citing Reddit’s API rules.

Free

Google Alerts emails new Google results for a query. It’s free and useful for news and blogs, but it doesn’t see social platforms. F5Bot’s free tier covers Reddit and Hacker News.

Research inside Claude and ChatGPT

The tools above watch and count. When the job is to understand, for example what customers say is missing from a competitor’s product or what questions a niche keeps asking, you end up reading the threads anyway.

Scrollhound gives Claude or ChatGPT the posts themselves: whole Reddit threads with up to 500 comments, X threads and replies, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram transcripts and comments, and search across them, with a link on every quote. You ask in plain words and get an answer built from real posts. The thread quoted at the top of this page was read that way.

It’s honest to say what it isn’t: no alerts, no dashboards, no sentiment trend lines, and no archive beyond what the platforms show. If you need to know within the hour that your brand is trending, use a monitoring tool. If you need to know what people think, with sources a client can click, it’s a fit. Plans start at $39 a month for 1,500 reads, pay as you go is $25 per 1,000, and a Reddit thread with its comments is 1 read.

How to choose

  1. Need alerts? Brand24 or Awario on a budget; F5Bot or Syften if Reddit is the main place.
  2. Enterprise budget and an analyst? Brandwatch, Meltwater or Talkwalker. Ask each for a trial on your own queries.
  3. Already on Sprout or Hootsuite? Check what your plan includes before adding a separate tool.
  4. Research, not monitoring? Read the conversation in your AI with a connector, and see the recipes for prompts.

Questions

What's the difference between social listening and social monitoring?

Monitoring tracks mentions of your brand and alerts you. Listening looks across the conversation, beyond your mentions, for themes, sentiment and trends. Most tools sell both under one name.

Is there a free social listening tool?

F5Bot is free for Reddit and Hacker News keyword alerts, and Google Alerts is free for the web, though it doesn't cover social platforms. Most paid tools offer a 7 to 30 day trial.

Which social listening tools cover Reddit?

Brand24, Mention, Meltwater, Brandwatch, Octolens, Syften and F5Bot all list Reddit. Hootsuite includes Reddit only on Enterprise. GummySearch, a popular Reddit tool, closed in November 2025.

Can Claude or ChatGPT do social listening?

Not on their own: they can't read most social platforms. With a connector such as Scrollhound they can read threads, comments and transcripts on demand, which suits research. They don't send alerts or keep a running dashboard.
