Competitor analysis on social media with AI (template inside)

A social media competitor analysis template you can fill in with Claude or ChatGPT in minutes, with a real TikTok example: Duolingo vs Babbel.

Short answer

Pull each competitor's recent posts with their real numbers, compare them on posting rhythm, median views, formats and hooks, then read the comments on their best posts. With Scrollhound connected, Claude or ChatGPT fills in the template below from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X and Reddit in a few minutes, with a link to every post it cites.

Most social competitor analyses take an afternoon of scrolling and a spreadsheet of numbers copied by hand. The part that matters, why the best posts worked, often doesn’t get done at all. With a connector that reads the platforms, your AI can do the collecting and you can spend the time on the why.

The template

Copy this and fill in one block per competitor. The prompt below does it for you.

COMPETITOR: <name and @handle>
PLATFORM: <TikTok / Instagram / YouTube / X>
FOLLOWERS:
POSTS IN THE LAST 30 DAYS: (skip pinned posts)
MEDIAN VIEWS PER POST:
MEDIAN VIEWS AS % OF FOLLOWERS:
TYPICAL LENGTH OR FORMAT:
TOP 3 POSTS: (link, views, what it's about, first line)
WHAT THE TOP POSTS SHARE: (topic, hook, format, length)
WHAT THEIR AUDIENCE ASKS: (from the comments on the top posts)
WHAT WE COULD DO DIFFERENTLY:

A real run: Duolingo vs Babbel on TikTok

On 27 October 2026 we pulled both brands’ 12 most recent TikToks. Both lists started with a pinned video from 2025, so we left those out and compared the 11 recent ones each.

Duolingo Babbel
Followers 18.3M 588K
Recent videos 11 in two weeks (13 to 26 Oct) 11 in a month (21 Sep to 21 Oct)
Median plays 509K 33.4K
Median plays as % of followers 2.8% 5.7%
Typical length 7 to 15 seconds 14 to 40 seconds
Top video “so close eddy, you’re a pink lafufu”, 5.1M plays “The English language is Germanic, but it also has a lot of influence from French”, 63.7K plays

What the numbers say, beyond “Duolingo is bigger”:

  • Two different strategies. Duolingo posts short, character-led meme videos almost daily (captions like “could’ve been us if u did ur lesson”). Babbel posts language explainers, many filmed at a polyglot event, about twice a week.
  • Babbel reaches more of its own audience. Its median video reaches 5.7% of its follower count, against Duolingo’s 2.8%. A smaller account with focused content can punch above its size.
  • Babbel’s content gets saved. Its Nahuatl basics video has 1K bookmarks on 3.8K likes, a save for roughly every four likes. Duolingo’s biggest hit has 135K bookmarks on 1M likes, about one in seven. Explainers get kept; memes get shared.

A brand in a crowded niche could take both lessons: a recurring character for reach, and explainers people save.

The prompt

Use Scrollhound to compare <@competitor1> and <@competitor2> on <TikTok/Instagram>. List each
account's last 30 posts with plays, skip pinned posts, and fill in this template for each:
<paste the template>
Then read the top 50 comments on each account's best post and add what their audience asks.
Link every post you mention.

For YouTube, ask for a channel’s last 50 uploads; for X, a creator’s last 200 posts ranked by engagement. The competitor channel teardown and short-form video teardown recipes go deeper on one account, down to the transcripts of their best videos.

Set it up

Add Scrollhound to Claude or ChatGPT as a connector, then paste the prompt with your competitors’ handles. Ten accounts across two platforms takes a few minutes, and the comment step is where you’ll find the gaps worth filling.

Questions

Which numbers matter most in a social competitor analysis?

Median views per post (not the average, which one viral hit distorts), posting frequency, and engagement that signals intent, like saves and shares. Follower counts matter less than how much of that audience each post reaches.

How many posts should I compare?

The last 20 to 30 per platform, skipping pinned posts, which are often months or years old. That's enough to see a pattern without old strategy mixing in.

Can it analyse Instagram competitors?

Yes. It reads an account's recent posts and Reels with plays, likes, comments and captions, and a Reel's comments and transcript. Pinned posts come first, so tell the AI to skip them.

Is it allowed to analyse competitors this way?

It reads the same public posts and numbers anyone can see on the profile, without logging in, and it never interacts with the accounts.
