Can Claude or ChatGPT watch YouTube videos? Why not, and the fix

Paste a YouTube link into Claude or ChatGPT and you mostly get the title and description. Here's why, and three ways to give them the whole video's words.

Short answer

Not from a link. Neither Claude nor ChatGPT can play a YouTube video, and pasting the link gets them the page's title and description at best, not what's said in the video. To make them understand a video, give them its transcript: paste it in, or connect a tool such as Scrollhound that fetches the transcript of any YouTube, TikTok or Instagram video.

You paste a YouTube link into Claude and ask “what does she say about pricing?” The answer comes back confident and vague, built from the video’s title and description. Neither assistant can watch the video, and neither can reliably get its words from a link.

Claude. Claude reads web pages through its web fetch tool, which takes a page’s text and doesn’t run JavaScript. A video’s transcript isn’t part of that page text, so it never reaches Claude. Anthropic doesn’t publish a statement about YouTube specifically, but in practice you get the page around the video, not the video. Claude also doesn’t accept video files: its upload list is documents and images.

ChatGPT. OpenAI hasn’t said either. Independent tests published in October 2026 report that ChatGPT “couldn’t retrieve the video’s transcript or audio” from a YouTube link (Atlas Cloud). ChatGPT does accept uploaded video files, but OpenAI’s own help page warns it “may not analyze the entire video or accurately interpret its audio”. And you’d need the file in the first place.

Three ways to give them the words

1. Paste the transcript yourself. On YouTube, open the description and click Show transcript, copy it, and paste it into the chat. It works, one video at a time. Plenty of creators do exactly this; it’s slow when you’re studying ten videos, and it leaves out the comments.

2. Upload the video to ChatGPT. Fine for a short clip of your own. For a competitor’s video you first have to download it, and OpenAI says the analysis can miss parts and audio.

3. Connect a tool that fetches transcripts. This is the one that scales. Add a connector once, then paste links as you normally would, and the assistant reads the full transcript itself. Scrollhound does this for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, and can also list a channel’s uploads, search YouTube by topic and read a video’s comments. If you only need YouTube in Claude, the vidIQ connector is worth a look too.

What it looks like

On 27 October 2026 we asked for the transcript of Kallaway’s How Social Media Algorithms Actually Work (17 minutes, 1.2M views). The whole caption track came back, starting “Today we’re talking about the social media algorithm,” with a link to continue for the last part. From there you can ask questions a title can’t answer, like what it says about posting times. It’s blunt: “Posting time does not matter.”

Prompts that work once the connector is on:

Get the transcript of <YouTube link> and list every claim it makes about the algorithm, with the
quote for each.
List @<channel>'s last 20 uploads, read the transcripts of the three most viewed, and break down
the first 30 seconds of each.

Set it up

In Claude, open Customize → Connectors, click + Add, then Add custom connector, name it Scrollhound and paste https://api.scrollhound.com/mcp. In ChatGPT, go to Plugins, click + and choose Add custom MCP server. Either way you sign in with your email, no password. The step-by-step guide walks through every menu, and this post covers long videos and costs.

Questions

Can Claude read a video file if I upload it?

No. Claude accepts documents and images, not video or audio files. ChatGPT accepts video uploads, but OpenAI says it may not analyse the whole video or get the audio right.

What about YouTube Shorts, TikToks and Reels?

Same problem, same fix. Scrollhound fetches transcripts for YouTube Shorts, TikToks and Instagram Reels as well as full-length videos.

What if the video has no captions?

Scrollhound transcribes the audio instead. Long videos can take a minute or two; until it's done the result says it's pending, and asking again gets the text.

Can I add Scrollhound to ChatGPT on any plan?

ChatGPT lets you add a custom server like Scrollhound on Business, Enterprise and Edu, and on Pro for servers that only read. Claude allows it on every plan, including Free.
